We had a pretty interesting discussion in capstone today on whether or not Jon Stewart can be considered a journalist.
Of course, the man himself doesn’t consider himself a journalist, but he and his crew at Comedy Central do produce journalism from time to time. They took folks to task on lies and rumors about the federal healthcare bill. They do a lot of work that improves the level of discourse in American politics by fighting the emotionally charged rhetoric of both major political parties. In a way, he’s helping to inform and cultivate discussion.
That said, there are some major issues with him falling under that title, including the fact that he wears his political beliefs on his sleeve (though you could argue he’s more transparent than many other media outlets).
I’m wondering what other people think outside of the capstone class. He probably couldn’t fall under the full-fledged journalist category, but does he at least come close?
